The succulent trend is sweeping the nation! It's no wonder as these adorable, drought resistant babies can thrive just about anywhere. Three cactus patterns are included in this set:
1. The Echino cactus. Made with dark and light shades of green, this spherical plant will look great in any color pot. Pop on a yellow, orange, red or purple flower and you'll have the perfect plant.
2. The prickly pear cactus is named for its pear shaped fruit and its super sharp spikes. The pears are edible and are often made into jellies, candies and yes, even martinis! The fruits are typically red or purple in color so be sure to make appropriate fabric selections for these.
3. The Saguaro is the quintessential cactus. Some have grown over 70 feet tall and have been known to live more than 150 years. This little guy is much smaller but with some luck, he might just live that long!
These are original quilt blocks designed by Barbara Cain. They each measure 8'' x 8'' when finished. They can be either paper pieced or traditionally pieced.
If you plan to piece traditionally, simply cut apart the pattern and cut out the corresponding fabric pieces adding a 1/4" seam allowance to each side. It is important to be accurate with this! Sew the pieces together with 1/4'' seams just as you would with any other patchwork. Be sure to sew the pieces together in order, i.e., start with piece A1, then attach A2, A3, etc.. Once you connect all of the A pieces, do the same with the B pieces. When the B pieces are all connected to one another, sew B onto A, and so on.

For 6'' x 6'' blocks, reduce the patterns to 75 percent.
For 10'' x 10'' blocks, enlarge the patterns to 125 percent.
For 12'' x 12'' blocks, enlarge the patterns to 150 percent.
For 16" x 16" blocks, enlarge the pattern to 200 percent.
These patterns would make great mug rugs, hot pads, apron pockets or pot holders. Enlarge the patterns to make table toppers, wall hangings or tote bags for your gardening friends!
